MEDIA ALERT: Newtown Community asked to report on the “Newtown Vibe”

Anyone who lives, works or plays in and around Newtown is invited to report in on the “Newtown Vibe” at a public meeting on Wednesday 15 March.

Hosted by the Newtown Neighbourhood Centre and Member for Newtown, Jenny Leong MP, the meeting will give locals and Newtown-lovers an opportunity to give their views, and hear about the work done by the Newtown Vibe Roundtable to keep Newtown safe, diverse and respectful.

WHEN: Wednesday 15 March, 6-7:30pm
WHERE: Upstairs Hall, Newtown Neighbourhood Centre, 1 Bedford St Newtown

Jenny Leong MP, Member for Newtown said:

“The community came together at the last public meeting to address some serious concerns around safety and inclusion. Over 150 people attended to share their ideas for maintaining the respectful and fun vibe that Newtown is loved for.

“With the Roundtable we’ve brought together people with an interest in keeping Newtown safe, while ensuring that our streets and venues stay full of life. While there have been some concerns about the change of the mood in Newtown since the lockouts, there hasn’t been a jump in alcohol-related violence or reported anti-social behaviour.

“You don’t need to have a 2042 postcode to be a Newtown local. A lot of people come to our area because they like the inclusive, eclectic vibe. Everyone who cares about keeping Newtown safe, respectful and fun is encouraged to come along.

Liz Yeo, CEO of Newtown Neighbourhood Centre said:

“We look forward to hosting the next community meeting, and hearing what the community is saying in 2017 about the Newtown Vibe.  The community’s questions, concerns, and ideas will shape our next steps in striving to protect all we value and love about Newtown.”

BACKGROUND:

In 2015, the Newtown community came together at a public meeting in response to concerns about safety in the local area, as a joint initiative of the Newtown Neighbourhood Centre, Newtown Precinct Business Association, ACON, and the Office of Jenny Leong MP, Member for Newtown.

151 people attended the meeting, putting forward ideas for how to protect the diverse, accepting, eclectic, welcoming “Newtown Vibe”. As a result of the meeting, a working group known as the Newtown Vibe Roundtable was established, to monitor and respond to safety, planning, transport and amenity issues that impact the Newtown area.

The Roundtable have called another public meeting, to report back on their activities so far and to give the community the chance to raise concerns that still need to be addressed or new issues or initiatives that should be considered.
